Metal staircase type and regulation definition

1 Utility staircase

Approved document K defines a ‘utility stair ‘…a stair used for escape, access for maintenance, or purposes other than as the usual route for moving between levels on a day-to-day basis.’ maximum of 16 risers.

2 General access staircase

Approved document K defines a ‘general access stair’ as a stair intended for all users of a building on a day-to-day basis, as a normal route between levels.12 risers, but exceptional no more than 16 in small premises where the plan area is restricted.

3 Private staircase

Approved document K defines a ‘private stair’ as ‘…a stair intended to be used for only one dwelling’.

4 Common staircase

Approved document B defines a ‘common stair’ as ‘… An escape stair that serves more than one flat.’

5 Protected staircase
Approved document B defines a ‘protected stair’ as ‘…a stair discharging through a final exit to a place of safety
(Including any exit passageway between the foot of the stair and the final exit) that is adequately enclosed with fire-resisting construction.

6 Firefighting staircase
Approved document B defines a ‘firefighting stair’ as ‘… A protected stairway that connects to the accommodation area through only a firefighting lobby.’.

7  Staircase

7.1 General stair…(Industrial)
Except where otherwise indicated in this clause, the recommendations given in BS 5395-1 for straight stairs and in BS 5395-2 for helical and spiral stairs should be followed. The maximum number of risers in a single flight should be 16, for straight stairs, or 22, for helical and spiral stairs. There should be a change of line or direction of not less than 30° after 32 risers, for straight stairs or 44 risers, for helical or spiral stairs. Landings at the head of a stair should be designed so that it is not possible to step from a platform or walkway onto the stair without a change in direction.

7.2 Clear width ( width between handrails)
The minimum clear width should be 600 mm for occasional one-way traffic, 800 mm for regular one-way traffic and occasional two-way traffic, and 1000 mm for regular two-way traffic.

7.3 Pitch (straight stairs)
The minimum pitch for straight stairs should be 30°.
The maximum pitch for occasional access should be 42°.
The maximum pitch for regular two-way traffic should be 38°.
